Redux at Connecticut College › 03.27.2026
Looking forward to this year’s Triennial on Arts & Technology at Connecticut College. My group Redux (with Joe Cantrell) will be premiering our new work Limitation of Liability on Friday night at the Ammerman Center for the Arts’ Tansill Theater in Hillyer Hall.
Limitation of Liability is an exploration of the porous boundaries between the human and the non-human using the voice as a point of entry into a space of liminal humanity. In this performance, two sound practitioners enact a recitation using two distinct voices — one human, the other artificial. Each is altered in such a way that complicates its source.
The first voice is human in origin, but augmented with devices that force air into the nasal passage, as well as contact microphones and transducers that amplify and feed the voice back into the body itself. The other voice is electronically generated, but its parameters are manipulated using a variety of feedback mechanisms (including between performer and machine) to push against its designed mimicry of the organic. The two voices intertwine in a reading of the Limitation of Liability clause from the End User License Agreement for Apple’s Siri application, a technology that uses biological identification and imitation as its primary functional components. The result is the creation of a contemplative sonic environment inhabited by performers who are neither fully human nor mechanical. More >>
